From party host Drew: - Did you know that there’s support in the historical record (Wikipedia) for the idea that certain pirates actually were relatively chill about gender and sexuality, even some of the ones who also did murders? - Have you ever wanted to take control of a cargo ship captained by Tom Hanks and tell him that now you’re the captain actually, but like it's hot and maybe he wants you to? - Are you ready to sing “La Vie en rose” in French regardless of your proficiency in French? - Did you also steal your friend’s dad’s cable subscription’s HBO Max login? If you read the above questions, well...there’s no need to put on airs. Don’t lord your bookly learning over the other pirates. They're just here for the right to inherit property from a same-sex lover in a quasi-legal framework dependent upon captainship and circumstance...and because they feel seen. Which brings me to this: Our Party Means Flag. This year at our annual pride party on deck, in honor of our special guest Vico Ortiz, we're celebrating Calypso's birthday. Daughter of Titans, Mother of Kefalonia, this nymph has got it ALL. For those who haven't seen HBO Max's queer ensemble show, "Our Flag Means Death," Calypso's Birthday is a made up holiday for the crew and they have a whole party and it is very cute. (Yes, there’s more to it and, no, I won’t spoil it) At Our Party Means Flag, it's pride and we’re throwing in pan-nautical, pan-pirate/pan-pan-pirate vibes at no extra cost! It’s the deal of a century! And if you have any questions about what to wear, I give you this advice: don’t consider the exact logic of the theme. After all, a blunderbuss is not beloved for its accuracy, it’s beloved because of yarr. As they say, “something old, something new, something queer, something yarr, and a sixpence in your shoe.”
